Best Buy Open Box & Geek Squad Certified: A Real Buyer's Guide

Best Buy's clearance section is small. The real markdowns live in Open Box and Geek Squad Certified Refurbished. Both can save 30-60% versus new with full Best Buy warranty support, but the labeling is confusing.

The four Open Box condition grades

Excellent — Certified: Item is essentially new. Returned by a customer who didn't open it or barely used it. Best Buy inspected, cleaned, and certified. Typically 10-20% off new.
Excellent: Lightly used, all accessories present, original box. Cosmetic condition essentially perfect. 15-25% off new.
Satisfactory: Used, may have minor cosmetic wear or be missing original box. All accessories present. 25-40% off new — usually the sweet spot for value.
Fair: Visible cosmetic damage, may be missing accessories. Best Buy will list what's missing. 40-60% off new — only worth it if you don't care about the cosmetic issues.

Geek Squad Certified Refurbished

Different from Open Box. These are items that came back, were repaired or remanufactured by Best Buy's Geek Squad, and certified to work like new. They come with a Geek Squad 90-day warranty minimum — sometimes a full year for laptops and TVs.

For televisions, Geek Squad Certified is the single best clearance category at Best Buy. Save 35-50% on a 65" QLED that's been certified for full working order with the same in-home setup support as new.

What to avoid

Some Open Box items get listed with prices that look like deals but aren't. Watch for:

Open Box at less than 10% off new — usually means store associates listed it without a proper price cut. Wait or skip.
Items that say "Geek Squad Certified" but aren't on the certified-refurbished category page — these are sometimes mislabeled. Double-check via the URL contains "/cert-refurb/" or "/open-box/".
"Comp. Value" pricing that doesn't match the model's real retail price — Best Buy occasionally inflates the comp value. Search the model number directly on Best Buy or Google to see the true original price.

How returns work on Open Box

Open Box items get the same return policy as new at Best Buy: 15 days for most items, 30 days for My Best Buy Elite members. The warranty is the original manufacturer warranty in most cases (Geek Squad Certified has its own warranty as noted above).
