Free Shipping Thresholds at Every Major Retailer
Shipping costs eat clearance savings fast. A $20 clearance shirt with $8 shipping is a $28 shirt. Here's where every major retailer sets their free shipping bar in 2026.
Threshold table
- Walmart
- $35 free shipping minimum (always has been). Or Walmart+ for $98/year = free shipping no minimum.
- Target
- $35 free shipping. Or RedCard / Target Circle 360 = free shipping no minimum.
- Best Buy
- $35 free shipping. My Best Buy Plus ($50/year) = free shipping no minimum.
- Amazon
- $35 free shipping for non-Prime. Prime ($139/year) = no minimum, fast delivery on most items.
- Nike
- Free shipping on orders $50+. Free for Nike Members (free to join) on any order.
- Adidas
- $50 free shipping minimum. adiClub members free shipping on any order.
- REI
- Free standard shipping on orders $50+ for Co-op members ($30 lifetime).
- Old Navy / Gap / Banana Republic
- $50 free shipping. Or use Athletic and earn rewards points that offset.
- Under Armour
- $60 free shipping minimum (highest of major brands).
- Petsmart
- $49 free shipping or buy online pickup in store free.
- Home Depot / Lowe's
- $45 free shipping. In-store pickup always free regardless of amount.
When fillers make sense
If your cart is at $28 and you're facing $8 shipping, adding a $7 filler to hit the $35 threshold often makes sense. Better fillers:
- Anything you'd buy anyway in the next 30 days (light bulbs, cleaning supplies, granola bars)
- Gift cards (instantly liquid, no waste)
- Small consumables you go through (batteries, toothpaste, deodorant)
Bad fillers: impulse-buy items you wouldn't have purchased otherwise. The point of fillers is to hit the threshold without adding net spend.
When the membership pays off
- Amazon Prime ($139/yr)
- Worth it if you place ≥10 orders/year under $35 each. Plus all the other perks (Video, Music).
- Walmart+ ($98/yr)
- Worth it if you order ≥6 times/year and have a Walmart within 30 min (you get free delivery on groceries too).
- REI Co-op ($30 lifetime)
- One-time fee. Pays itself back on first Garage Sale purchase, plus annual dividend.
- Nike Membership (free)
- No-brainer — free shipping no minimum + early access to drops.
- Best Buy Plus ($50/yr)
- Worth it only if you buy ≥3 sub-$35 electronics items per year. Most people don't.
The threshold trick that costs you money
Hitting a $35 threshold by adding a $20 filler to a $20 cart = $40 spent (vs $28 with $8 shipping). You "saved" $8 in shipping by spending an extra $12. That's not saving.
The math: only add a filler if (a) you'd buy it anyway, OR (b) the filler is genuinely cheaper than the shipping cost it eliminates.
