Furniture Clearance: When Furniture Goes on Sale (Ashley, Wayfair, IKEA & More)

Updated May 23, 2026

Furniture carries huge margins, which means huge room for markdowns. Stores rotate floor models and last-season styles on a predictable calendar — buy at the wrong time and you overpay by hundreds.

The best months to buy

  • January & July: The two big furniture clearance windows. New collections launch in February and August, so the month before, retailers slash old inventory.
  • Holiday weekends: Presidents Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day are genuine furniture sale events, not just marketing.
  • End of month: Commissioned sales floors (Ashley, mattress stores) get more flexible near monthly quotas.

Where the real clearance is

Floor models & open-box are where you save 40-60%. Ask any furniture store about their clearance/as-is section — it is rarely advertised. Online, Wayfair's "Open Box" and "Clearance" tabs and IKEA's "As-is" (circular hub, in-store) hold the deepest cuts.

Category timing

  • Patio & outdoor — late August through September (end of season) is 50-70% off
  • Sofas & living room — January and July collection turnover
  • Mattresses — see our dedicated mattress guide; holiday weekends are best

The floor-model trick

A floor model that has been sat on for months is often discounted more than a scratch warrants. Inspect it, point out any flaw, and ask for an additional markdown — furniture pricing is far more negotiable than most shoppers realize.
