Macy's vs Kohl's vs JCPenney Clearance: Which Department Store Discounts Deepest
Macy's, Kohl's, and JCPenney all rely on clearance as a permanent revenue driver, but they price-cut on different cadences and let you stack coupons in very different ways. Picking the right store for what you're buying can mean a 20–40% swing on the final price.
Macy's
Markdown cadence
Macy's runs three named clearance tiers, marked on the tag: Sale, Clearance, and Final Sale (Last Act). Last Act items are non-returnable and typically priced at 65–80% off the original. Markdowns at Macy's happen on a rolling schedule — there isn't a single weekly drop day. Instead, each department lowers prices on a 3–4 week clock from when the item was first marked down.
Deepest-discount categories
- Designer handbags — Coach, Michael Kors, Kate Spade routinely hit Last Act at 70%+ off
- Men's suiting and ties — second-largest department, heavy seasonal markdowns
- Luggage — clearance often pairs with promo codes, can stack to 80%+ off
- Cookware (KitchenAid, All-Clad) — Last Act windows in late January and mid-July
Coupon stacking
Macy's coupons explicitly exclude "Last Act / Final Sale" items in most cases. Sale and Clearance items can stack with email or app coupons (usually 15–25% off). Star Rewards members get an extra 5%, stackable.
Kohl's
Markdown cadence
Kohl's clearance is the most aggressive of the three. The system: items hit yellow tags at 40% off, then drop to 50%, 60%, 70%, and finally 80% before being pulled. Markdowns happen weekly, typically Wednesday morning, on a 2-week cycle. So a 40%-off yellow tag this Wednesday becomes 50% next Wednesday, 60% the Wednesday after, and so on.
The Kohl's Cash multiplier
Kohl's Cash is the killer feature: spend $50 in qualifying products and you get $10 in Kohl's Cash to use later. During Kohl's Cash earning periods, even clearance items earn it. So a $25 clearance jacket can effectively net you another $5 in store credit. The dates run roughly every 3–4 weeks; check the Kohl's app for the next earning window before shopping.
Deepest-discount categories
- Active and athleisure — Adidas, Nike, Under Armour all stocked at deep discounts when seasons turn
- Bedding and bath — twice-yearly White Sales (January, August) layer additional coupons on top of clearance
- Toys — January post-holiday clearance is one of the cheapest places in retail to buy toys
- Small kitchen appliances — Ninja, Cuisinart, KitchenAid all show up in Kohl's clearance from Black Friday excess
Coupon stacking
Kohl's lets you stack: clearance price + 15–30% off coupon (most weeks) + Kohl's Cash earning + Kohl's Cash redemption from prior cycle + Kohl's Card 5% off (everyday). On a good clearance/coupon week, the total discount math can exceed 70% off the original ticket.
JCPenney
Markdown cadence
JCPenney runs deeper individual markdowns but smaller selection. Their clearance categories print on the tag: Sale, Clearance, and Final Cut. Final Cut items are typically 70–85% off the original.
Deepest-discount categories
- Liz Claiborne, St. John's Bay, Worthington — their private-label brands have the largest clearance footprints
- Boys' and girls' clothing — extremely aggressive markdowns post-back-to-school and post-holiday
- Bed linens — Royal Velvet and JCPenney Home brands clear at 80% off seasonally
- Window treatments and home decor — long-tail clearance with frequent 80%+ markdowns
Coupon stacking
JCPenney mails physical coupons ($10 off $25, $10 off $50) at consistent intervals to Reward Members. These coupons DO stack on clearance and Final Cut items most weeks — a rule the other two department stores enforce more strictly. The combination of Final Cut + $10 off $25 frequently delivers items at 90%+ off the original ticket.
Which one to shop, by category
- Designer handbags
- Macy's. The brand lineup is deeper and Last Act windows are predictable.
- Athleisure / active
- Kohl's. The Kohl's Cash + coupon stack on Nike/Adidas is unbeatable.
- Kids' clothing
- JCPenney. Final Cut + the coupon stack delivers absurd prices.
- Kitchenware
- Kohl's for everyday brands; Macy's Last Act for premium (All-Clad, Le Creuset)
- Bedding
- Kohl's during the White Sales (Jan/Aug); JCPenney any other time of year.
- Men's suiting
- Macy's. Largest selection, deepest Last Act discounts.
The "walk three stores in one mall" play
If you're in a mall that has all three (common in mid-tier malls), the optimal route on a single trip:
- Start at JCPenney — scan Final Cut racks with your stack of coupons; this is where the absolute lowest dollar prices live.
- Cross to Kohl's — check the active and home departments for yellow tags at 70%+, especially if a Kohl's Cash earn window is open.
- Finish at Macy's — handbags, suiting, and Last Act home goods. Slower-moving but higher-quality clearance.
The whole circuit takes about 90 minutes and routinely produces $200+ in real savings for under $100 spent.
